Breaking Boundaries: My First New Balance Collab with DTLR

When a DTLR rep slid into my DMs with an idea for New Balance’s Gray Day 2025, I knew it was a chance to step into uncharted territory. Despite the usual last-minute rush that comes with big brands, I was all in. This was my first time customizing a New Balance sneaker—specifically the 9060 model—and I was ready to show what these kicks could really become.

DTLR commissioned me to craft five custom shoeboxes for giveaways and one standout sneaker for display. For me, it wasn’t just about the design—it was about reimagining what a New Balance could be. New Balance sneakers aren’t the usual canvas for customizers, so this was my chance to break the mold.

The entire creative process was a highlight. I don’t rely on blueprints or mockups; I let the shoe speak to me. Midway through, I decided to overlay an acrylic piece on the engraved New Balance logo, only to realize the next day that it hid the beautiful honeycomb texture. So, I ripped it off—captured on video—and that raw, unfiltered moment resonated with people. It taught me not to fear mistakes but to embrace the unexpected twists that lead to something even better.

This partnership wasn’t just about the art; it was a crash course in knowing my worth and negotiating my value. Every big-brand project sharpens my skills and reinforces that I’m right where I need to be—baking different and redefining what footwear can be.

The response has been phenomenal. People are loving the intricate honeycomb engravings, the bee motifs, and the overall craftsmanship. The most buzz (pun intended) has come from the behind-the-scenes content—like the moment I peeled off that acrylic piece—which shows the authenticity and realness behind each pair.

Looking ahead, I hope this collaboration attracts more like-minded brands and opens up new doors. I’d love to work with New Balance and DTLR again, pushing the envelope and inspiring customers to dream beyond the conventional. After all, the goal is to make people see what’s possible—one custom sneaker at a time.
