3 Reasons To Keep Going

#1 A Change of Pace Wins the Race

Have you ever gone on a long walk? Sometimes, we’ll take walks as a family. Living in Georgia we have beautiful parks with hidden gems in them…streams, suspension bridges, waterfalls. My kids love the idea of going on a walk, but my daughter usually gets tired about 10 minutes in.

She says, in her cute voice, “Daddy! My legs don't work!” while taking long, arduous strides. At this point, I’ve got three options: 1) Point out the obvious and tell her that her legs are fine, 2) Appease the Princess and carry her, or 3) Go at her pace and take a break.

Depending on my mood I could go with any of those options, but if I want to ensure an optimal experience for myself and my family the best choice is to go out at the pace of my little girl.

Our world is so fast paced that we often forget… “It's ok to take a break.” If I pushed my daughter to keep walking I’m communicating that she shouldn’t listen to what her body is saying. If I pick her up I’m not empowering her to figure out what she needs. When I slow myself down to match her pace and even take a break she’s learning to listen to her body and know that…It’s okay to take a break. The destination will still be there.

When we get so focused on the finish line we miss the beauty of the journey.

What I’m about to say next may shock you, but Miley Cyrus said it best,

“There’s always gonna be another mountain. I’m always gonna wanna make it move. Always gonna be an uphill battle. Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose. Ain’t about how fast I get there. Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side… It’s the climb!”

Enjoy the climb, embrace the journey, and take a nap!

I hope this helped. I am offering you what I put into practice during my most difficult moments. It takes a strong community to get through hard times and I am so thankful to have you along for the journey.

Until next time, feel free to check out my narrative at ShoeBaker.com

Best,

-Nick
